BLUES EVOLUTION: Modern Original Soul & Blues In The Tradition of:
Atlantic/Stax · Robben Ford · Bobby Bland · Van Morrison · Ray Charles · BS&T · Dr. John · Joe Cocker
Hello,
This musicians call is for excellent musicians from around the world to join with Blues Evolution, in lending their musical vision and their "chops" to the production of a second Blues Evolution CD. Essentially, we seek to form a virtual Blues Evolution "super group" of excellent, but possibly unknown, players from around the world. By excellence, we envision refined players who would feel at home in a session with Sting or Steely Dan, but who understand the "real soul", harkening back to the time of Dan Penn and Jerry Wexler. If you have (access to) digital recording equipment, and the creativity and musical skill to contribute to this project, your in. Because this is a non-paying gig, we realize that this will not be for everyone. For others however, this will be just exactly what they have been searching for as an outlet for their musical expression or as a diversion from their typical musical affiliations. Although lead vocals, guitar, and drums are essentially covered by a core group of players, we are seeking BASS (Jaco style), HORN PLAYERS (primarily ensemble parts but also some tasty solo work), KEYBOARDS (jazz & gospel piano & organ), BACKGROUND (gospel) SINGERS and other interesting instrumentalists who can really sweeten the mix.
We often hear from guitar players, and we know that there are amazing players out there in small towns and big cities worldwide. However, as I mentioned above, the guitar slot is already filled and we are not seeking a guitarist, unless you are also a songwriter (as described below) or if you love working up song arrangements, or maybe if you have some other kind of really extra special magic dust that you want to tell us about. I should say also, that we have heard from so many wonderfully talented harp players and we are already working with three great players. I am sorry to say that we just don't have enough songs to utilize more harmonica players. However, we will also consider co-writing with the right collaborators, for this project or upcoming projects. I don't know how to describe the right collaborator except to say, we'll know it when we hear it. I would say however, that we would love to collaborate with somebody who comes from that Leon Russell, gospel influenced sensibility, or possibly someone who is writing in that Steve Cropper, Muscle Shoals vein. But since that is almost impossible to find, we would also love co-write with someone who has a jazzy, kinda bluesy, just very musical sensibility. And if we cast our minds to the pop music world, that description sort of brings to my mind artists like Sting or possibly Michael McDonald. So, if any of this sounds like you and if this idea of a virtual collaboration sounds interesting to you, here is a brief description of Blues Evolution.
The music of Blues Evolution has been described as "Ray Charles meets Steely Dan." Besides the obvious comparisons to Steely Dan, it is also Steely Dan-like in the sense that Blues Evolution consists of two primary players/producers; Elexus Quinn (lead vocals) and (guitarist & orchestrator), Ziggy True. It's an eclectic approach to Blues music; in the neighborhood of the Blues, but not down that same alley.

P.S. We have been receiving responses to this email from wonderful players from throughout the world and have actually begun working relationships with some really great folks already. I want to clarify however, this is not at all some major project or highway to fame. We are two musicians writing, recording, and releasing our take on the music we love. We can't do it alone because the music we love requires some pretty sophisticated playing on a variety of instruments and additionally, we find the opportunity of meeting and working with new musical colleagues as well as the idea of completing this recording project virtually, also very appealing. Of course, there is nothing like recording with hot players in the same room, playing off of each other, but since that is not possible and rather than not record the music at all, we are trying something a little different which we hope will also work. By the way, even if you are not interested in participating in the virtual Blues Evolution project, we still very much look forward to hearing from you and learning about your musical vision and projects with which you may be involved so that we can become aware of what other players from around the world are putting down. We honestly look forward to hearing from you either way. |
